PemvidutideDual GLP-1/glucagon receptor agonist

Pemvidutide is being investigated for obesity and metabolic liver disease. The key distinction is between reducing liver fat and improving the inflammation or scarring that can make liver disease dangerous.

What is Pemvidutide?

Pemvidutide is a dual GLP-1 and glucagon receptor agonist investigated for obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

How it works

It combines appetite-related and metabolic signalling. Effects on body weight and liver fat are assessed separately from effects on liver inflammation or scarring.

Effects studied

MASH and weight outcomes

The IMPACT programme examines histological MASH outcomes alongside the broader metabolic programme. 1 2

Evidence: MASH resolution without worsening fibrosis does not mean fibrosis improved; long-term liver complications require separate follow-up.

The liver adds another dimension

Pemvidutide activates GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. This combination is being studied for effects on body weight and liver metabolism. The rationale is especially relevant to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, where fat accumulation occurs alongside liver inflammation and injury.

What does a better scan show?

Imaging can quantify changes in liver fat. That is useful, but less fat on a scan is not identical to less inflammation, improved fibrosis or a lower risk of liver failure. These outcomes require different measurements and different lengths of follow-up.

Why biopsy endpoints matter

The retained IMPACT research examines histological outcomes: changes assessed in liver tissue. Improvement in MASH without worsening fibrosis is still different from improvement in fibrosis itself. That distinction limits what can be concluded from an encouraging result.

The broader treatment picture

Clinical value depends on weight change, gastrointestinal symptoms, continued treatment and the person’s other metabolic conditions. Longer-term research needs to establish whether improvements in liver tissue lead to fewer serious liver events. Obesity and MASH remain separate research questions for pemvidutide. The evidence does not support a general “liver detox” claim or a promise that weight loss reverses every stage of liver disease.

Safety & status

Gastrointestinal tolerability and sustained treatment exposure matter when interpreting benefit. Long-term serious liver outcomes and less common harms remain distinct research questions.

Country and product status

Country-specific product availability and authorisation require a separate current check.

Frequently asked questions

Does reduced liver fat mean MASH has resolved?

No. Liver-fat imaging and histological inflammatory injury measure different features.

What does “without worsening fibrosis” mean?

It means scarring did not get worse under that endpoint; it does not necessarily mean the scarring improved.
