TeduglutidePrescription peptide
Teduglutide helps some people with short bowel syndrome absorb more fluid and nutrients. The practical goal is less reliance on support delivered through a vein.
What is Teduglutide?
Teduglutide is a GLP-2 analogue used in short bowel syndrome. EU Revestive is intended for a defined intestinal-failure treatment context. 1
How it works
GLP-2 activity supports the remaining intestine’s capacity to absorb fluid and nutrients.

What does the evidence show?
Short bowel syndrome trials and EMA indication
When absorption becomes the limiting factor
After substantial bowel loss, eating enough may not translate into absorbing enough. Some people need intravenous fluid or nutrition to maintain hydration and nutritional status. Teduglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-2 analogue developed for this specific problem.
Helping the bowel do more
GLP-2 signalling supports the intestine’s absorptive capacity. Teduglutide acts on this pathway, helping the remaining bowel take up more fluid and nutrients. It does not replace the missing length of intestine, and the response depends partly on the anatomy and function that remain. 1
What counts as progress
Studies measure reductions in parenteral support while checking that hydration and nutrition remain adequate. Fewer infusion days can matter even when a person still needs support. Complete independence is a separate outcome; reducing weekly volume does not amount to a universal cure.
Why monitoring stays central
Improved absorption can change fluid balance. Bowel obstruction, biliary or pancreatic problems and surveillance for intestinal growths also require attention. The care team needs to reassess nutritional support as the response develops. Teduglutide therefore involves ongoing intestinal rehabilitation and monitoring; its use cannot be extended to ordinary bloating, food sensitivity or digestive discomfort.
Safety & status
Fluid balance, bowel obstruction, biliary and pancreatic problems, and intestinal-growth surveillance are important aspects of treatment. 1
Country and product status
Revestive is authorised in the EU for short bowel syndrome in defined adult and paediatric populations.
Frequently asked questions
Does it regrow a normal-length intestine?
The treatment rationale is improved function of the remaining intestine, not replacement of the removed bowel.
Does reduced intravenous support mean none is needed?
No. A reduction in volume or days can be useful without reaching complete independence. 1
