Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a succulent plant whose thick leaves contain a clear gel and a bitter yellow latex.
Also listed as Aloe, Aloe Barbadensis
Skin reactions can still happen
Aloe gel applied to the skin is generally well tolerated, but burning, itching and rashes have been reported. A soothing reputation does not rule out an individual reaction. 1
Oral use needs more caution
Aloe leaf extracts have been linked to cases of acute hepatitis. Excessive use of latex may also increase adverse effects from digoxin and related heart medicines. NCCIH cautions that aloe taken by mouth may be unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Evidence of short-term oral-gel tolerability does not establish the safety of long-term use or of latex-containing products. 1
