Black Currant

Black currant (Ribes nigrum) is a shrub whose dark berries are used for juice and whose seeds give an oil containing gamma-linolenic acid.

Also listed as Blackcurrant, Black Currant Seed Oil, Cassis, European Black Currant

Seed-oil safety remains incompletely characterized

Arthritis UK notes that interactions and safety in people with musculoskeletal conditions have not been well studied. Trials have used 3 g or 10.5 g daily, but have not established an optimal dose. 1

Extra precautions apply to leaf medicines

EMA does not recommend blackcurrant leaf medicines during pregnancy, breastfeeding or below age 18. Preparations used to flush the urinary tract are unsuitable when fluid intake must be restricted, as in severe heart or kidney disease. Fever, painful urination or blood in urine requires medical assessment; so does joint pain accompanied by swelling, redness or fever. 2
