Botanical
Blue-green algae
Blue-green algae are cyanobacteria that grow in water. One supplement ingredient is Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon.
Why does contamination matter?
At significant exposure levels, microcystins can damage the liver and kidneys. The consequences of long-term exposure to low amounts remain uncertain. 1
Who needs particular caution?
The Verbraucherzentrale advises against AFA products for children, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and flags possible interactions with immunosuppressants, anticoagulants and some pain medicines. AFA should not replace prescribed treatment. 2
