Guggul

Guggul is the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree and has a long history of use in Ayurveda. It contains plant steroids called guggulsterones.

Also listed as Commiphora mukul, Commiphora Wightii, Guggulsterones, pregna-4

Rash and medicine interactions

Reported reactions include headache, nausea, loose stools and rash. Laboratory studies suggest effects on CYP3A4, an enzyme that processes medicines, so interactions are a concern even though their clinical size is uncertain. 1

A liver signal that needs careful attribution

ANSES reviewed liver-injury reports involving mixed products containing guggul. Other ingredients were plausible causes, so these reports cannot isolate guggul’s role. They remain relevant safety signals for the mixtures. 2

For information, not individual medical advice. Ingredient studies do not establish the effectiveness of these products.
