Hops are the cone-shaped flowers of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus, best known for flavoring beer. They contain compounds such as humulone and xanthohumol.

Could it affect daytime alertness?

The EU monograph warns that hops medicines may impair driving or operating machinery. It lists no reported medicine interactions, which is narrower than proving every combination safe. 1

Who needs extra caution?

EMA does not recommend use during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety data are insufficient; use under age 12 is not established. Symptoms lasting more than two weeks or worsening warrant medical assessment. 1 2

Have adverse reactions been reported?

The 2025 review describes reports including dizziness, diarrhea, and nausea, often with other medicines or conditions. The reports were inconsistent and did not establish a repeatable safety signal. 3
