Jujube

Jujube is the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba, a small tree from Asia, also known as the Chinese date. It is eaten as food and used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Also listed as Ziziphus Jujuba, Chinese Date, Da Zao, Fructus Jujubae

A reported interaction deserves attention

The clinical monograph reports a possible serious interaction between venlafaxine and a sour-date seed remedy. It does not establish the same risk from an ordinary serving of fruit, but it is a reason to discuss medicinal jujube products with the prescriber when antidepressants are involved. 1

Pregnancy and longer-term use remain uncertain

The monograph finds insufficient information on medicinal use in pregnancy and breastfeeding and advises avoiding bark preparations. Limited adverse-event information also means that a familiar edible fruit cannot stand in for a safety assessment of every seed or extract product. 1

Allergic reactions, including swelling and breathing symptoms, have also been reported; possible cross-reactivity with latex is described. 1

For information, not individual medical advice. Ingredient studies do not establish the effectiveness of these products.
