Read past the species name

Look for the full strain designation, the viable count through the use-by date, and storage instructions. CFU means colony-forming units, a measure of living microorganisms; a count given only at manufacture can fall before you take the product. 1

What do the studied amounts mean?

For breastfed infant colic, ESPGHAN describes DSM 17938 at 100 million CFU daily for at least 21 days. Its acute-gastroenteritis option is 100–400 million CFU daily for five days. These are condition-specific pediatric regimens to discuss with a clinician, not interchangeable doses for general wellness. 2
