Menthol
Menthol is a compound from peppermint and other mint oils that creates a cooling sensation on the skin and mucous membranes.
Cooling products can still burn
Health Canada identified rare serious skin burns with topical pain relievers containing menthol, alone or with other ingredients. Severe pain, swelling or blistering calls for stopping the product and seeking medical attention. 1
Keep menthol away from young children’s faces
NCCIH warns against inhaling menthol or applying it to the face of an infant or small child because it may impair breathing. Peppermint oil’s familiar smell does not remove this risk. 2
