Schisandra

Schisandra is the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, a climbing vine used as a remedy in traditional Chinese medicine. It contains plant compounds called lignans.

Also listed as Omija, Omija Cha, Gomishi, Repnihat

Medicine interactions are the practical concern

Schisandra raised tacrolimus levels in transplant patients. Other proposed interactions involve drug-processing enzymes and transport proteins. MSK advises a clinician’s interaction review; some laboratory findings have uncertain clinical relevance. 1

What does a short trial tell us?

The 12-week strength trial reported no adverse events. Its small older-adult sample cannot establish safety in pregnancy or with long-term use. 2
