Which interactions matter?

St. John’s wort can weaken birth control pills, warfarin, cyclosporine and some seizure, HIV and cancer medicines. Combining it with serotonin-affecting antidepressants can cause serious adverse effects. A medication review with a clinician or pharmacist is important before use. 1

What else needs consideration?

NCCIH warns about sun-related skin reactions and possible harm during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Diarrhea, dizziness, restlessness and sleep problems can also occur. Depression warrants professional assessment rather than delaying care to try a supplement. 1
