Vanadium

Vanadium is a trace metal found in small amounts in foods such as mushrooms, shellfish and grains. It is not established as essential for humans.

What happened in diabetes studies?

A 2008 systematic review found no trials meeting its original quality and duration criteria. Five studies admitted under relaxed criteria reported improved glucose control, but poor study quality prevented reliable conclusions. This is unresolved efficacy, not proof that every vanadium compound is inactive. 1

Early improvements were not supported by rigorous enough trials. 1

A placebo-controlled study found no clear benefit

In 40 adults with type 2 diabetes, 100 mg sodium metavanadate daily for six weeks did not produce statistically significant pre-to-post improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol or LDL. The authors found no beneficial use for this regimen. 2
