Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing compound the body makes in small amounts and uses in enzymes that produce energy. Spinach, broccoli and organ meats contain a little.

Also listed as ALA, thioctic acid, Alpha Lipoid Acid

Does food supply alpha-lipoic acid?

Alpha-lipoic acid occurs in vegetables, meat and organ meats, as well as being synthesized in the body. No dietary deficiency is recognized. A review notes that there is no recommended daily dietary intake; supplement trial doses therefore do not represent a food-intake target. 1 2

Food and concentrated supplements are different exposures

EFSA did not identify a link between naturally occurring alpha-lipoic acid in food and insulin autoimmune syndrome. Its safety concern centered on added alpha-lipoic acid, including supplements. 3
