Amla

Amla, also called Indian gooseberry, is the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica. It contains vitamin C and polyphenols, including tannins.

Also listed as Phyllanthus Emblica, Anwala, Indian Gooseberry, Emblica Officinalis

Why the preparation matters

A 98-person trial used 500 mg of extract twice daily for 12 weeks, alongside lifestyle advice. The product was standardized to at least 35% polyphenols and supplied by the study’s industry sponsor. These specifications describe an extract, not an equivalent dose of fresh fruit. 1

What should a label tell you?

The dyslipidemia trial identified the fruit extract, extraction method and standardized constituents. Those details allow a comparison with the research; a label giving only “amla 500 mg” does not establish that it matches the tested preparation. 1
