Bacteria
Bifidobacterium longum
Bifidobacterium longum is a bacterial species that lives naturally in the human gut and is used in probiotic products. Effects can depend on the specific strain.
Reading the label beyond the headline
NIH advises attention to the full strain name, storage instructions and viable counts through the use-by date. A count measured only at manufacture does not account for organisms dying during storage. 1
Live and heat-killed products are different
CLA8013 was studied after heat treatment, so its positive result is not evidence that the bacteria must be alive or settle in the gut. It is also not a reason to substitute an unrelated live strain for the tested preparation. 2
