Black fungus mushroom (Auricularia polytricha) is an edible wood ear fungus that grows on dead wood and is widely used in East Asian cooking.

Soaking is the practical safety issue

The Centre for Food Safety advises limiting room-temperature soaking to two hours, refrigerating longer soaks and using soaked mushrooms promptly. Slime or an unusual smell are reasons to discard them. 1
