Also listed as Arctium lappa, Burdock Root Extract, Burdock Root Powder, Burdock Extract
Who should avoid burdock?
The EMA contraindicates use with allergy to burdock or other plants in the Asteraceae family. Anaphylactic shock has been reported, with frequency unknown. Use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or under age 18 is not recommended because adequate data are lacking. 1
When do urinary symptoms need assessment?
The monograph advises medical assessment for fever, painful urination, spasms or blood in the urine, and for worsening symptoms. It does not recommend combining burdock with synthetic diuretics, although its interaction section lists no reported interactions. 1
Persistent urinary complaints or appetite loss warrant consultation after two weeks; persistent skin symptoms after four weeks. These time limits belong to the monograph’s traditional medicinal uses. 1
