Butyric Acid
Butyric acid (butyrate) is a short-chain fatty acid produced when gut bacteria ferment fiber. It also occurs in butter and other dairy fats.
How well was the mixture tolerated?
Over 12 weeks, headache, dizziness, nausea, heartburn and abdominal distension were reported, without significant differences between groups. No adverse event caused discontinuation of the active intervention. This is reassuring for the studied mixture and duration, but does not establish long-term safety. 1
Who was not represented?
The trial excluded pregnant or breastfeeding people, those with inflammatory bowel disease or celiac disease, and people with liver or kidney impairment. It also restricted many medicines. Its safety findings therefore cannot settle safety in these groups or provide a comprehensive drug-interaction assessment. 1
