Catechin

Catechin is a flavonoid, a type of plant polyphenol, found in tea, cocoa, apples and grapes.

Concentrated extracts need a different safety assessment

EFSA generally considered traditional green tea infusions safe, while acknowledging rare liver reactions. Supplements supplying at least 800 mg EGCG daily were associated with increased liver enzymes. EFSA could not establish a safe supplement dose below that level; 800 mg is not a recommended target. 1

Who is covered by EU label warnings?

The regulation requires warnings against use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, below age 18, on an empty stomach, or alongside other green tea products on the same day. These requirements concern the specified EGCG-containing extracts. 2

For information, not individual medical advice. Ingredient studies do not establish the effectiveness of these products.
