Color changes and testing
Oral products can discolor stools or urine; diarrhea is reported. Chlorophyllin can cause false-positive guaiac stool-blood tests. The Linus Pauling Institute advises avoiding these supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safety has not been tested. 1
Does food-coloring use settle safety?
The Commission summarized EFSA’s conclusion that chlorophylls at reported food-additive uses raised no safety concern, while the data were inadequate to set an acceptable daily intake. This is a limited assessment of specified food uses, not confirmation that every concentrated supplement or derivative is safe. 2
