Enzyme
Diamine Oxidase
Diamine oxidase (DAO) is an enzyme that breaks down histamine, mainly in the gut. Supplements are often made from pig kidney extract.
Short trials leave safety questions open
No adverse effects were recorded in the DAO migraine group over one month. That observation cannot establish long-term safety or safety in pregnancy. 1
Symptoms deserve a broader assessment
The guideline advises considering other causes, including food allergy, celiac disease and carbohydrate malabsorption, rather than relying on DAO testing or extensive food exclusions. 2
