Lactobacillus plantarum

Lactobacillus plantarum, now named Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, is a lactic acid bacterium common in fermented plant foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi and sourdough.

Who needs particular care?

In healthy people, probiotics can cause gas, while serious infections are rare. The risk picture changes in people who are seriously ill or have weakened immune systems, and in premature infants: probiotic organisms have caused severe infections in vulnerable patients. General tolerability does not establish safety for those groups. 1

What remains outside the trial evidence?

The CCFM1143 trial excluded pregnancy, immunodeficiency and organic disease. Its absence of reported adverse events cannot establish safety in those populations. NIH also notes that there is no blanket recommendation for healthy people to use probiotics; the relevant strain, purpose and duration need to be considered individually. 1 2
