Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium citrate is a magnesium salt of citric acid. It is a common form of magnesium in supplements and, in larger amounts, is used as a laxative.
Which number on the label counts?
The Supplement Facts panel reports elemental magnesium: the amount of the mineral itself, rather than the weight of the entire magnesium citrate compound. Comparing elemental amounts makes products more meaningful to compare with studies. 1
A supplement intended to supply magnesium and a liquid or powder medicine intended to relieve constipation have different directions for use. MedlinePlus describes the laxative as short-term use and advises against use beyond one week without medical direction. 2
What does “better absorbed” leave unanswered?
The citrate-versus-oxide trial supports an absorption difference at the studied dose. It does not show that citrate is the best form for every purpose or that a higher dose produces a better result. For a sleep claim, the sleep trial is the relevant comparison; for constipation, the medicine’s indication and directions matter. 2 3 4
