Methylene Blue

Methylene blue is a synthetic blue dye first made in the 19th century. It is used as a medicine for certain blood disorders and as a stain in laboratories.

Interactions are a central concern

The US injection label warns of potentially fatal serotonin syndrome with serotonergic medicines and opioids. It also contraindicates use in G6PD deficiency because of hemolytic anemia, the destruction of red blood cells. These are medicinal-product warnings; the oral memory experiment does not establish that unsupervised combinations are safe. 1 2

Pregnancy requires a medical benefit-risk decision

The FDA label reserves use during pregnancy for situations in which the potential benefit justifies the fetal risk. A preliminary cognitive finding is not a pregnancy safety assessment. 1 2
