Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng, or Asian ginseng, is a perennial plant native to Korea and northeast China whose root is used in traditional medicine.

Also listed as True Ginseng, Panax, Mountain Ginseng, Wild Ginseng

Could it make sleep worse?

Insomnia is the most common adverse effect of Asian ginseng. Severe rash, liver injury and serious allergic reactions have also been reported, though uncommonly. Short-term oral use up to six months appears generally safe in recommended amounts, but long-term safety remains uncertain. 1

Blood sugar and medicines need attention

Asian ginseng may lower blood sugar, affect clotting and worsen autoimmune disorders. NCCIH recommends a healthcare discussion before use with medicines, and specifically for people with diabetes. A possible glucose benefit is also a reason to check safety when glucose-lowering treatment is already involved. 1

Pregnancy, children and persistent fatigue

EMA does not recommend its assessed ginseng medicines during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or below age 18, because adequate data are lacking. It advises medical or pharmacy review if fatigue or weakness persists beyond two weeks during use. 2
