Panax Ginseng
Panax ginseng, or Asian ginseng, is a perennial plant native to Korea and northeast China whose root is used in traditional medicine.
Also listed as True Ginseng, Panax, Mountain Ginseng, Wild Ginseng
Red, white and extracted
White ginseng is dried root; red ginseng is steamed before drying. EMA also assesses liquid and solid extracts. Identifying the preparation matters when comparing a product with research. 1
The European traditional-use assessment concerns fatigue and weakness. It rests on longstanding medicinal use rather than clinical proof, and does not apply automatically to food supplements, which are regulated differently. 1
How do doses compare?
EMA’s traditional-use monograph lists 600–2,000 mg daily for powdered white-ginseng root and 1,200–1,800 mg for powdered red root in adults. Extract amounts differ by preparation. These medicinal-use ranges are not universal supplement targets; the monograph limits use to three months. 2
