Probiotics
Probiotics are live microorganisms, mostly bacteria and yeasts, taken in fermented foods or supplements.
Who needs particular caution?
Serious illness and impaired immunity increase the risk of harm, including infection. NCCIH recommends clinical oversight for serious underlying conditions; apparently safe use in healthy people does not settle safety in these groups. 1
Premature infants are a separate medical situation
FDA warns that probiotics given to hospitalized preterm infants can cause invasive, potentially fatal infections. Infant use cannot be inferred from adult supplement studies. 2
What about an acute stomach bug?
German consumer guidance advises against these live-culture foods during acute gastroenteritis and recommends medical advice for therapeutic use in chronic disease. 3
