Botanical
Sage
Sage, Salvia officinalis, is a culinary and medicinal herb from the mint family whose leaves are used fresh, dried or as an extract.
Also listed as Salvia officinali, Sage Extract, Sage Powder, Sage Leaf
Why concentrated sage deserves caution
Food amounts are generally considered safe. Common sage contains thujone, which can be toxic in large amounts; high doses or prolonged use may be unsafe. 1
Pregnancy, children and persistent symptoms
EMA does not recommend medicinal sage during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or below age 18, because adequate data are lacking. Allergy to the preparation is a contraindication. Persistent mouth or throat symptoms beyond one week warrant medical advice under the monograph. 2
