Botanical
Silymarin
Silymarin is a mixture of plant compounds extracted from the seeds of milk thistle, Silybum marianum, and is mostly studied for liver conditions.
Why does the preparation matter?
The Cochrane review separated silymarin alone from complexes containing ingredients such as vitamin E or phosphatidylcholine. Results cannot automatically be transferred to any other milk-thistle product. 1
What does European traditional use mean?
EMA recognizes specified milk-thistle fruit preparations for digestive symptoms and liver support after serious illness has been medically excluded. This rests on traditional use, not conclusive clinical trials. 2
