Botanical
Silymarin
Silymarin is a mixture of plant compounds extracted from the seeds of milk thistle, Silybum marianum, and is mostly studied for liver conditions.
Which adverse effects are known?
EMA lists gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, and allergic reactions. Milk-thistle medicines must not be used by people allergic to milk thistle or other Asteraceae plants. 1
What about medicines and pregnancy?
NCCIH advises discussing use with a clinician when taking medicines. Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety is poorly studied; some supplements have also contained contaminants or different silymarin amounts than their labels stated. 2
