Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, or niacin, is an essential water-soluble vitamin that includes nicotinic acid and nicotinamide. The body can also make it from tryptophan.

Also listed as Niacin, B3

What is the upper limit?

The US adult upper limit is 35 mg daily of supplemental niacin, excluding medically supervised treatment. It is a safety boundary, not an intake target. 1

Why do European limits differ by form?

DGE reports European adult limits of 10 mg daily for nicotinic acid and 900 mg for nicotinamide. These values do not cover medical treatment, pregnancy or breastfeeding; usual foods do not cause the adverse effects described for high-dose products. 2

When does medication matter?

High-dose nicotinic acid can raise blood glucose. People using diabetes medicines need medical monitoring if they also use high-dose niacin. 1
