Estrogen Balance
How to distinguish hormone measurements, symptom relief and supplement claims.
What does estrogen balance mean here?
This page separates hormone measurements from symptoms and treatment decisions. It focuses on the menopause-related evidence behind selected supplement claims.
Why estrogen changes
Ovarian hormone production declines during menopause. Periods become irregular and eventually stop; hot flashes, disturbed sleep and vaginal dryness can accompany the transition. Experiences differ considerably, and many people manage without treatment. 1
Does a hormone test answer the question?
NICE usually identifies menopause clinically in otherwise healthy people aged 45 or older with typical symptoms. It does not recommend estradiol testing for this purpose. Suspected menopause before 40 needs a different assessment, including repeated measurements of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). 2
When is bleeding a reason to seek care?
Any vaginal bleeding after menopause should be checked, even a small amount or a single episode. Dry or thinned tissues and polyps are possible causes, but bleeding can also indicate cancer. 3
Nutrients with the strongest ratings
Sorted by the largest rated effect. Bars show effect size, the letter is the evidence grade.
Does soy raise estrogen?
A review of 47 studies found no significant change in estradiol, estrone or SHBG before menopause, or in the principal hormone measures after menopause. Small changes in other measures had uncertain clinical meaning. A hormone effect and relief of symptoms are separate questions. 4
Hormone measurements do not establish a reliable estrogen-raising treatment. 4
What did the DIM trial actually measure?
In a randomized trial, 130 women taking tamoxifen received DIM, 150 mg twice daily, or placebo for 12 months. DIM changed urinary estrogen metabolites and increased sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), but did not change breast density. It also reduced active tamoxifen metabolites, raising an interaction concern. These biomarker findings do not demonstrate symptom relief or cancer prevention. 5
How do other plants compare?
Soy and red-clover trials for menopausal symptoms have yielded inconsistent results. For dong quai, evening primrose oil and wild yam, research is too limited to draw reliable conclusions. 7
What can help beyond supplements?
NICE recommends discussing hormone therapy for hot flashes and considering menopause-specific cognitive behavioral therapy. Treatment choices depend on medical history and preferences. 2
Support without chasing a hormone number
Dietary changes and movement can support general wellbeing, even though particular foods are not established hot-flash treatments. Relaxation practices may be personally helpful without proving a hormonal effect. 8
Questions people ask
Do all menopause symptoms need treatment?
No. Severity varies, and many people manage without treatment. 1
Is a hormone test always necessary?
No. Typical menopause after 45 is usually identified clinically. 2
Should bleeding after menopause be checked?
Yes, including a single small episode. 3
Are plant products automatically safer?
No. Supplements can interact with medicines, and long-term safety data are limited. 7
