Fatty acid

Alpha-Linolenic Acid

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential omega-3 fatty acid from plants such as flaxseed and walnuts: the body has to get it from food.

Also listed as ALA, α-linolenic acid

Which omega-3 is in the bottle?

An ALA source and an EPA/DHA source answer different nutritional questions. BfR identifies linseed and rapeseed oils as plant ALA sources, while long-chain EPA and DHA occur in fish and can also be supplied by suitable microalgae products. Comparing the named fatty acids is more informative than the word omega-3 alone. 1
