A serious allergy risk changes the balance
Australia removed andrographis from the ingredients allowed in new listed medicines from September 17, 2026, because severe allergic reactions could not be adequately managed within that lower-risk pathway. Existing listings were not automatically removed. This is an Australian regulatory decision, not a statement about legal status in every country. 1
Reactions can occur on first use or after previous use without problems. Breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, dizziness or collapse can indicate anaphylaxis and require immediate emergency medical help. 1
Pregnancy and medicines need particular caution
NIH notes possible interactions with blood-pressure medicines, anticoagulants and immunosuppressants, based largely on animal and laboratory findings rather than established human interaction rates. It also advises against use around conception and during pregnancy because of fertility concerns from animal studies. 1 2 3
The EMA’s 2014 assessment found that safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding had not been studied. Its older discussion of short-term trial tolerability should be read alongside the more recent allergy findings. 1 2 3
