Barberry, Berberis vulgaris, is a thorny shrub with red berries. Its root and bark contain the yellow alkaloid berberine.

Food and concentrated preparations are different choices
The edible fruit contains much less berberine than root or bark, and its content falls as it ripens. Evidence about a concentrated preparation therefore cannot be converted into a serving recommendation for berries. 1
