Chloride
Chloride is an essential electrolyte, the negatively charged form of chlorine. Most of it comes from table salt (sodium chloride).
Where does it come from?
Most dietary chloride comes from sodium chloride, or table salt. Bread, cheese, processed meat and canned fish are important sources. 1
Why do reference values differ?
DGE gives an estimated adequate intake of 2,300 mg daily for adults, including pregnancy and breastfeeding. EFSA sets a safe and adequate adult intake of 3,100 mg daily, also applying during pregnancy and breastfeeding. These refer to total intake, not extra supplements. 1 2
EFSA derived its value from the sodium reference value because evidence could not establish a chloride requirement independently. The figure is not an upper intake limit. 2
