Choline
Choline is an essential nutrient found in eggs, meat and fish. The body makes some of it and uses it for cell membranes and the messenger acetylcholine.
Also listed as Trimethylethanolamine, Choline Bitartrate
Everyday sources
NIH lists 147 mg in one large hard-boiled egg, 107 mg in half a US cup of roasted soybeans and 43 mg in a US cup of cooked quinoa. These examples show how animal and plant foods can both contribute. 1
How much is enough?
EFSA’s adequate intake is 400 mg daily for adults, 480 mg during pregnancy and 520 mg while breastfeeding. These values describe total intake, not an amount to add as a supplement; they were informed by population diets and studies that corrected a deficiency. 2
