Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil is the top grade of olive oil, extracted from olives by mechanical means only, without chemical refining. It is mostly monounsaturated fat.
Extra virgin, virgin and refined blends
EU retail categories distinguish extra-virgin oil from virgin oil and blends containing refined and virgin oils. The category describes production and quality criteria, not the outcome of a clinical trial on that particular bottle. 1
A trial comparing high- and low-polyphenol oils asks a more specific question than whether the label says extra virgin. Its findings should remain attached to that comparison. 2
