Gingerol
Gingerols are pungent constituents of ginger, found alongside related compounds such as shogaols.
What can be said about safety?
No related toxicity was reported in the small 6-gingerol trial. That limited observation cannot establish broad long-term safety. For whole ginger, NCCIH lists abdominal discomfort, heartburn, diarrhea and mouth or throat irritation, and advises discussing use alongside medicines with a healthcare professional. 1 2
Pregnancy evidence needs the same distinction
NCCIH describes ginger supplementation in pregnancy as possibly safe with clinical consultation, while breastfeeding data are limited. That guidance concerns ginger and does not establish a safe pregnancy dose of isolated gingerol. 1 2
