Botanical
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo biloba is a tree native to China; supplements usually contain an extract from its leaves. It is mostly studied for memory and thinking.
Also listed as Tanakan, Tebonin, Rökan, Maidenhair
Why does the preparation matter?
EMA assesses specified dry extracts and powdered leaves separately. The powdered-leaf use for minor circulation symptoms rests on traditional use, while the dementia assessment concerns the dry extract. A label saying only “ginkgo” does not identify which evidence applies. 1
The 240 mg daily amount often discussed in dementia research is a studied extract dose. It is not a food requirement, and the trials do not establish that larger amounts bring greater benefit. 2
