Histidine
Histidine is an essential amino acid that has to come from food. The body uses it, among other things, to make histamine.
Also listed as L-Histidine
What happened at higher doses?
A short graded-dose study in healthy adults found lower ferritin at 12 g and changes in zinc and a liver enzyme at 16 g daily, although values remained within reference ranges. Its authors identified 8 g as a no-observed-adverse-effect level for their experiment, not a recommended intake or an established long-term upper limit. 1
Who was not covered?
VKM found no supplementation studies in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Its assessment of specified low supplemental doses therefore does not settle safety for these groups. 2
