L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is a compound the body makes from the amino acids lysine and methionine and also gets from meat. It carries fatty acids into the mitochondria to be burned for energy.

Also listed as Acetyl-L-Carnitine, ALCAR, Acetylcarnitine, L-Carnitine-L-Tartrate

Does transporting fat mean burning more of it?

Carnitine helps move long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria, the parts of cells that release energy from fuel. That established role prompted researchers to study supplements for weight loss and exercise. Healthy people usually make enough carnitine themselves, so needing it in cells does not automatically mean needing it in a capsule. 1

What counts as carnitine?

The name covers related compounds, including L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine, and propionyl-L-carnitine. Acetyl-L-carnitine has been studied in cognitive disorders, while other trials investigate weight, exercise, and cardiovascular conditions. Results need to stay attached to the form and population tested. 1

When is deficiency a medical issue?

Some people do have a medical carnitine deficiency: a genetic transport disorder can prevent enough carnitine reaching cells, and conditions such as chronic kidney failure can reduce production or increase losses. Supplementation can correct these deficiencies. That clinical use is separate from trying to improve energy in a healthy person. 1

Questions people ask

Is L-carnitine a fat burner?

Its role in moving fatty acids explains the research interest. The 37-trial review found a modest average weight difference, without significant changes in waist circumference or body-fat percentage. 1 2

Do vegetarians automatically need a supplement?

No. Healthy people can make enough carnitine even when their diet supplies little. 1

Does less soreness mean better athletic performance?

The recovery review measured soreness and muscle-damage markers. Those findings alone do not establish better sporting performance. 3

Is acetyl-L-carnitine proven to improve everyday focus?

The cognitive evidence discussed here concerns people with cognitive impairment or dementia, with mixed findings. It does not establish an everyday focus benefit in healthy adults. 1

Is there a safe maximum dose?

No formal tolerable upper intake level has been established. NIH nevertheless reports adverse effects around 3 g/day and specific concerns for seizure disorders and uremia. 1
