Physical Energy

Feeling less exhausted and performing better during exercise are different outcomes. Caffeine and creatine have specific sports uses; persistent low energy still calls for attention to its cause.

What do you mean by more physical energy?

For this page, the question has two parts: feeling able to get through everyday tasks, and producing more work during exercise.

Fatigue means weariness or lack of energy. It differs from drowsiness, the feeling that you need to sleep. Fatigue can follow exertion or stress, but fatigue that persists despite rest and adequate nutrition needs medical assessment. 1

What counts as an improvement?

Exercise studies can measure a faster cycling time, greater power or longer endurance. Fatigue trials often use questionnaires instead. A lower fatigue score and a better race time answer different questions, even when both are described as “energy.” 2 3

What might be draining your energy?

Poor sleep, stress, medicines and illness can all contribute. Iron-deficiency anemia, diabetes, thyroid disease and sleep apnea are among the medical possibilities. A pattern of tiredness is more useful for assessment than assuming a particular supplement is missing. 4

Medical advice is appropriate when unexplained tiredness lasts a few weeks, disrupts daily life or accompanies symptoms such as weight loss or nighttime gasping. 4

Which supplements fit which goal?

These findings concern the named tasks and populations. They are not a single ranking of products for all-day energy. 2 3 5 6

CaffeineSupported

Evidence is strongest for endurance exercise. Studies commonly use 3–6 mg/kg body weight, but that research range can exceed European safety guidance for a single dose. It is not a personal dosing recommendation. 5 7

CreatineSupported

Creatine helps replenish ATP, the immediate energy supply used by cells. Its clearest exercise application is repeated intense effort and adaptation to training. The broad 2021 review also covers clinical research, but that does not establish it as a treatment for unexplained everyday fatigue; its authors disclosed industry relationships. 6

Beetroot juiceMixed

A systematic review found promising but inconsistent endurance results, including studies in trained athletes with no improvement. The research largely tested nitrate-containing juice or concentrates, so a generic beetroot powder cannot be assumed to reproduce the same exposure or result. 2

Coenzyme Q10Mixed

A 2022 meta-analysis of 13 trials involving 1,126 people found a small-to-moderate reduction in fatigue scores. Participants included healthy people and people with illnesses; scales, doses and duration differed considerably. This is encouraging fatigue evidence, not proof of faster running or a predictable benefit for every tired person. 3

Food and fluids still supply the foundation

Adequate food intake and hydration underpin exercise performance. Supplements can sometimes add to that foundation, but do not replace it. 5

Rest, nutrition and stress matter when assessing fatigue. If fatigue does not improve despite these, MedlinePlus advises medical evaluation rather than continued self-treatment. 1

When can an energy product backfire?

EFSA considers single caffeine doses up to 200 mg and daily totals up to 400 mg without safety concern for healthy adults. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, its daily figure is 200 mg. These include all sources and are safety assessments, not targets; even 100 mg near bedtime can disturb sleep. 7

Creatine often increases body weight through water retention; digestive discomfort is also reported. CoQ10 may interact with warfarin or insulin and with some cancer treatments. 5 8

What this page covers

This review covers caffeine, creatine, beetroot preparations and CoQ10. Other ingredients sold for energy are outside its scope.

Questions people ask

Is fatigue the same as sleepiness?

No. Fatigue is low energy or weariness; sleepiness is the urge to sleep. They can occur together. 1

Can creatine make me stronger without making me feel more awake?

Its main exercise rationale concerns muscle energy availability and training adaptation. That is a different outcome from feeling alert. 6

Does beetroot powder work like the juice used in studies?

Not necessarily. The reviewed trials used specific nitrate-containing preparations; their findings do not establish equivalence for an unspecified powder. 2

How long does a CoQ10 benefit last after stopping?

The meta-analysis found that trials did not follow participants after discontinuation, so lasting benefit remains uncertain. 3

Can caffeine make tomorrow’s tiredness worse?

Caffeine taken near bedtime can disrupt sleep, even at 100 mg in some adults. Timing matters alongside the total amount. 7
