L-Tyrosine
L-tyrosine is an amino acid the body makes from phenylalanine. It is the starting material for dopamine, noradrenaline and thyroid hormones.
Also listed as n-Acetyl-l-tyrosine, NALT, acetyl-l-tyrosine, N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine
An important caution from Norway
In 2016, Norway’s VKM concluded that supplemental daily doses of 1,250 to 2,000 mg could pose a risk of adverse effects in adults. The assessment relied on animal toxicity data and limited margins of exposure because suitable human safety studies were lacking. This is a precautionary risk assessment, not proof that those doses injure every user. 1
More did not work better in older adults
A study of 17 adults aged 60 to 75 compared three single doses and found poorer working-memory performance at higher doses. It had no placebo condition, so the result compares doses rather than tyrosine with no supplement. It nevertheless argues against assuming that increasing the amount improves cognition. 2
