Lactobacillus rhamnosus

Lactobacillus rhamnosus, now named Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, is a lactic acid bacterium found in the human gut. Its strain GG is one of the most studied probiotics.

Who needs extra caution?

Probiotics can cause mild gas. Serious infections have been reported mainly in people who are severely ill or immunocompromised; premature infants are also a particularly vulnerable group. These situations need clinical oversight rather than an over-the-counter trial. 1

With diarrhea, fluids come first

Replacing lost fluid and salts is the priority. IQWiG advises a rehydration solution for small children, older people and severe diarrhea. A probiotic does not take the place of this treatment. 2
