Lactobacillus rhamnosus

Lactobacillus rhamnosus, now named Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, is a lactic acid bacterium found in the human gut. Its strain GG is one of the most studied probiotics.

Read past the species name

Look for the full strain designation, the viable count through the use-by date, and storage instructions. CFU means colony-forming units, a measure of living microorganisms; a count given only at manufacture can fall before you take the product. 1

Why dose and timing depend on the goal

For antibiotic-associated diarrhea prevention in at-risk children, ESPGHAN describes at least 5 billion CFU of LGG daily, beginning with the antibiotic. For acute gastroenteritis it describes at least 10 billion daily for five to seven days. These are clinical regimens for specific indications, not a daily requirement. 2
