Lactobacillus is a group of rod-shaped lactic acid bacteria found in the gut, mouth and vagina and in fermented foods. In 2020 many of its species were moved into new genera.

Is yogurt equivalent to a supplement?

Yogurt is made with cultures such as L. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. Fermentation alone does not mean a food contains a probiotic with a demonstrated health benefit. 1
