Lion’s mane
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom that contains hericenones, erinacines and other compounds. It is mostly studied for cognition.
Also listed as Hericium erinaceus, Monkey's Head, Houtou (infrequent), Igelstachelbart
Why the preparation matters
The older-adult study used tablets containing 96% dried mushroom powder; the 2025 study used a concentrated fruiting-body extract. Their doses describe different preparations and cannot be treated as interchangeable recommendations. 1 2
The German consumer advice service describes “Vitalpilz” as a marketing term, not proof of medicinal efficacy. 3
