How do supplement limits differ?
Germany’s BfR recommends no more than 250 mg magnesium in a supplement’s daily serving, divided into at least two portions. The European limit for additional magnesium is 250 mg daily; the US adult limit for supplements and medicines is 350 mg. Naturally occurring food magnesium is excluded from these limits. 1 2
Why kidney function matters
High supplemental doses can cause diarrhea, nausea and cramping. Kidney impairment makes toxic accumulation more likely; severe toxicity can affect breathing and heart rhythm. 1
Which medicines need attention?
Magnesium reduces absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and oral bisphosphonates. NIH describes antibiotics at least two hours before or four to six hours after magnesium, and at least two hours between magnesium and an oral bisphosphonate. A pharmacist can check the specific medicine and schedule. 1
